Dr. Rafik Mansour is a sole practitioner obstetrician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital who is on-call 24 hours a day. Bridget Blythe of NECN
One of the things that connects every person on the planet is life. The way we each entered the world may differ, but we all arrived through a birthing process of some sort. Three sisters from Massachusetts are sharing in a delivery experience that's becoming less and less common. All three of them have had their children delivered by one man. Dr. Rafik Mansour is a sole practitioner obstetrician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He both sees and delivers his patients. It also means he is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It’s perhaps why recent research finds that solo practices make up less than a quarter of the entire physician population in the U.S. as of 2011. Mansour said, “It’s taxing on your body and physical health an on your family health.”His patients are glad he’s there. For many ladies in labor, they don’t wind up with their usual doctor in the delivery room. And Mansour makes sure he is the one to deliver the baby at all times. Unless Mansour is on a rare vacation, he’s the one helping bring his patients’ babies into the world.
